Fatty acid synthase
Fatty acid synthase (FAS) is an enzyme complex in our bodies responsible for creating fatty acids, which are essential for energy storage and building cell membranes. It works by assembling small molecules called acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA into longer chains through a series of chemical reactions, primarily forming palmitic acid, a type of saturated fat. This process occurs mainly in the liver and fat tissue, especially when calorie intake exceeds energy needs. Proper FAS function is vital for maintaining healthy fat levels, but overactivity can contribute to conditions like obesity and metabolic disorders.
