False Vocal Folds

False vocal folds, also known as ventricular folds, are paired tissue structures located above the true vocal cords within the larynx. Unlike the true vocal cords, which are responsible for producing sound, the false vocal folds do not directly create voice. Instead, they serve to protect the airway, assist in swallowing, and help with breathing by closing tightly during strenuous activities or swallowing. When they vibrate or become involved in voice production, it often indicates abnormality or specific vocal techniques, but under normal conditions, they remain closed or inactive during speech.
