Fairbairn's Models of Internal Object Relations
Fairbairn’s models of internal object relations describe how early experiences with caregivers shape our inner psychological world. He believed that individuals develop internal representations of themselves and others based on these relationships, which influence how they see themselves and interact with others later in life. If early relationships were nurturing, they foster healthy internal objects; if they were neglectful or harmful, they create problematic internal images that can lead to emotional difficulties. These internal models guide our behaviors and feelings, often unconsciously, affecting our ability to form trusting, secure relationships.
