eye transplantation
Eye transplantation, or enucleation, involves replacing a damaged or missing eye with a donor eye. This complex procedure requires connecting blood vessels, nerves, and muscles to restore blood flow, sensation, and movement. Currently, full eye transplants are experimental due to challenges in re-establishing vision—since the optic nerve, which carries visual signals to the brain, cannot yet be reconnected. However, partial transplants or prosthetic eyes can improve appearance and function. Advances in regenerative medicine and nerve repair hold promise for future breakthroughs, aiming to restore both eye structure and vision in more complete ways.
