Expressed Emotion

Expressed Emotion (EE) is a measure of the emotional attitude and communication style that relatives or close others have toward someone with a mental health condition. It reflects how much they express criticism, hostility, or over-involvement. High EE environments—characterized by frequent criticism or emotional over-involvement—can increase the risk of relapse or worsening of the individual’s condition. Conversely, low EE environments tend to be supportive and less critical, which generally promote better recovery outcomes. Understanding EE helps mental health professionals develop strategies to improve family interactions and support the individual's recovery process.
