Exilliteratur
Exilliteratur refers to literature produced by German-speaking authors who escaped or went into exile during the Nazi regime (1933–1945). It primarily includes works that expressed political opposition, refugee experiences, and critiques of totalitarianism. These authors often wrote from outside Germany, using their writings to resist censorship, reflect on exile’s emotional and intellectual challenges, and oppose Nazi ideology. Exilliteratur played a significant role in maintaining cultural identity and providing dissenting voices during a dark period in history. It remains an important body of modern German literature, highlighting themes of displacement, resistance, and the fight for human rights.
