Exchange Theory is a social psychology concept that suggests people form and maintain relationships based on reciprocal give-and-take. It posits that individuals seek interactions where the benefits outweigh the costs, aiming for mutual reward. People evaluate relationships by considering what they contribute and receive, expecting fairness and balance. When the perceived benefits—such as support, affection, or resources—match or exceed the costs—like time and effort—the relationship is likely to be maintained.
