European Heatwave of 2003
The European Heatwave of 2003 was an extreme and prolonged period of very high temperatures across much of Europe, lasting several weeks during the summer. This intense heat was caused by a high-pressure system that trapped warm air over the continent. The temperatures soared above normal levels, sometimes surpassing 40°C (104°F). The heat led to widespread health risks, droughts, and crop failures, resulting in thousands of deaths, especially among vulnerable populations. It highlighted the increasing impact of climate variability and the need for better preparedness for extreme weather events.
