European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) is an international court established to protect human rights across the 47 member countries of the Council of Europe. When individuals believe their rights, as guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights, have been violated by a government, they can bring their case before the ECtHR after exhausting domestic legal avenues. The court reviews these cases and issues judgments that are legally binding on the countries involved, promoting the enforcement of fundamental rights like fairness, privacy, and freedom from torture or discrimination.
