Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF)
The Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) was a political coalition in Ethiopia formed in 1989, mainly comprising ethnically-based parties. It led Ethiopia’s government from 1991 until it dissolved in 2019. The coalition played a key role in ending a long-standing conflict and establishing a federal system based on ethnic identities. It aimed to foster stability and development but was also criticized for authoritarian tendencies and repressing political dissent. In 2019, the EPRDF was replaced by the Prosperity Party as part of Ethiopia’s political reorganization, with the goal of creating a more unified national identity.
