ESKAPE pathogens
ESKAPE pathogens are a group of six bacteria known for causing serious infections and resisting many antibiotics, making them difficult to treat. The name ESKAPE comes from their initials: Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species. These bacteria are often found in hospitals and can cause infections like pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and urinary tract infections. Their ability to "escape" the effects of antibiotics poses significant challenges for healthcare, emphasizing the need for continued research and better infection control strategies.
