Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents
Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents (ESAs) are medications that help the body produce more red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the blood. They are often used for people with anemia (low red blood cell count) caused by chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy, or certain medical conditions. ESAs mimic a natural hormone called erythropoietin, which signals the bone marrow to make more red blood cells. This treatment can reduce symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath, improving energy and quality of life. However, they need to be carefully monitored to avoid potential risks like high blood pressure or abnormal blood clotting.
