Eric Gairy was a prominent Grenadian politician who became the island's first Prime Minister in 1974. Originally a labor leader and activist, he founded the Grenada United Labour Party and was known for advocating workers’ rights. Gairy's leadership was marked by efforts to modernize Grenada, but he also faced accusations of authoritarianism and corruption. His rule ended in 1979 when he was overthrown by a military coup, leading to a period of political upheaval. Despite his controversial legacy, Gairy is recognized as a key figure in Grenada's journey toward self-governance and independence.
