epistemic uncertainty
Epistemic uncertainty refers to the lack of knowledge or information about a situation, model, or environment. It arises because our understanding isn't complete or perfect, making predictions less confident. For example, if we’re unsure about the earlier climate data for a region, our conclusions about future climate trends might also be uncertain. This type of uncertainty can often be reduced by gathering more data or improving models. In essence, epistemic uncertainty stems from what we don't know, and addressing it involves learning more to improve decision-making and predictions.
