Episcleritis

Episcleritis is an inflammation of the episclera, a thin layer of tissue covering the white part of the eye. It can cause redness, discomfort, and sensitivity to light but usually does not affect vision. It is often associated with autoimmune conditions, where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its tissues. While episcleritis is generally mild and self-limiting, it can be linked to uveitis, which is a more serious inflammation of the eye's middle layer. In ocular immunology, understanding these conditions helps in diagnosing and treating eye-related autoimmune diseases effectively.
