Epiglottitis

Epiglottitis is an inflammation of the epiglottis, the small flap of tissue at the back of the throat that covers the windpipe when swallowing. This condition can cause severe swelling, making it difficult to breathe or swallow. It often results from infections, especially bacterial ones like Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Symptoms include sudden sore throat, high fever, difficulty breathing, and drooling. Epiglottitis is a medical emergency because swelling can block airflow. Prompt treatment with antibiotics and sometimes airway support is essential to prevent life-threatening complications.
