Epiglottis

The epiglottis is a small flap of tissue located at the base of the tongue, above the voice box (larynx). Its main function is to open and close the airway during swallowing. When you eat or drink, the epiglottis folds down to cover the windpipe, preventing food and liquids from entering your lungs. Once swallowing is complete, it lifts back up, allowing air to pass into the lungs. This ensures that breathing and swallowing happen safely without interference or choking. The epiglottis plays a crucial role in protecting the respiratory system during eating.
