Epidurals

An epidural is a medical procedure used to manage pain during childbirth or certain surgeries. It involves inserting a thin tube, called a catheter, into the epidural space around the spinal cord in the lower back. Through this tube, pain-relieving medication is administered, numbing the nerves that transmit pain signals from the uterus and pelvis. The result is effective pain relief while allowing the mother to remain alert and active. Epidurals are generally safe, but like all procedures, they carry some risks and potential side effects, which healthcare providers discuss beforehand.
