Epidural space

The epidural space is a natural area located outside the protective membranes (dura mater) surrounding the spinal cord, within the spinal canal. It contains fat, small blood vessels, and connective tissue. Clinically, this space is significant because anesthetics can be injected here to numb the lower body, commonly during childbirth or surgery. The epidural space runs along the length of the spine, providing a target area for medication administration without directly penetrating the dura. Its precise location and structure help ensure effective, localized pain relief while minimizing risks.
