Epidural Injection
An epidural injection is a medical procedure where medication is delivered into the epidural space around the spinal cord. This space is just outside the membranes covering the spinal nerves. The goal is to reduce inflammation and relieve pain, often used for conditions like herniated discs or chronic back pain. During the procedure, a healthcare provider inserts a needle through the skin into the epidural space, then injects a combination of corticosteroids and anesthetics. It can provide temporary or long-term pain relief and is commonly used in managing back or neck pain associated with nerve irritation.
