Epidermoid cyst
An epidermoid cyst is a common, benign bump that forms under the skin, originating from the epidermis (outer skin layer). It develops when skin cells or keratin, a protein found in skin, get trapped beneath the surface, forming a sac filled with a soft, cheese-like material. These cysts are usually slow-growing, painless, and movable, often appearing on the face, neck, or trunk. While they’re not dangerous, they can become inflamed or infected, leading to redness and discomfort. Mild treatment options include surgical removal if necessary, especially if the cyst causes cosmetic concerns or irritation.
