Enterostomy

An enterostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the abdomen to allow the intestines to discharge waste outside the body. This is often necessary when parts of the digestive tract are damaged or need to be bypassed due to conditions like cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or injury. The opening, called a stoma, is usually covered with a pouch that collects waste. Enterostomies can be temporary or permanent, depending on the underlying medical situation. The procedure helps patients manage their health while potentially alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life.
