Energy Resources Conservation Board

The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) was a regulatory agency responsible for overseeing the development and safety of Alberta’s oil, gas, and coal resources. It ensured that resource extraction was conducted responsibly, safely, and in an environmentally sound manner, while also managing the economic and public interest aspects. The ERCB established rules, issued permits, and monitored operations to prevent accidents, protect the environment, and ensure efficient resource use. In 2013, it was replaced by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) to unify energy regulation in the province.
