employment at will

Employment at-will means that either the employer or the employee can end the employment relationship at any time, for any reason that is not illegal, or with no reason at all. This means there is no fixed term or guarantee of ongoing employment. However, employers cannot fire employees for illegal reasons like discrimination or retaliation. The concept provides flexibility for both parties but also means job security depends on mutual agreement and lawful conduct. Normally, employment at-will is the default in most U.S. states unless there's a specific employment contract stating otherwise.
