The Emperor of Japan is the ceremonial and symbolic leader of Japan and the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world. The role is largely ceremonial today, with no governing power, as Japan is a constitutional monarchy. The current Emperor, Naruhito, ascended the throne in May 2019, following his father, Akihito. The Emperor performs various official duties, represents Japan at state functions, and is considered a symbol of the nation and its unity. The Imperial Family is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and traditions, with many rituals and celebrations reflecting the country's history.
