Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID)
Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs) are new or reappearing illnesses caused by microorganisms like viruses or bacteria that are increasingly affecting people worldwide. They can result from factors such as population growth, urbanization, environmental changes, and global travel, which facilitate the spread of pathogens. EIDs may be entirely new diseases or existing ones that are spreading faster or in new areas. Recognizing and understanding EIDs is crucial for public health to prevent outbreaks, develop vaccines, and implement effective control measures. Examples include COVID-19, Zika virus, and drug-resistant tuberculosis.
