Elongation factors
Elongation factors are proteins that assist in the process of gene expression, specifically during the synthesis of proteins. They help the enzyme RNA polymerase to move smoothly along the DNA, adding new RNA nucleotides to grow the messenger RNA (mRNA) strand. Basically, they ensure that the copying process of genetic instructions happens efficiently and accurately, allowing cells to produce proteins necessary for their functions. Without elongation factors, the process of reading DNA to make proteins would be slow or prone to errors.
