Elizabethan Religious Settlement

The Elizabethan Religious Settlement was a series of laws established by Queen Elizabeth I in 1559 to unify England's religious practices after decades of conflict. It aimed to create a moderate Protestant church that balanced Catholic traditions with reforms called for by Protestants. The Settlement restored the Church of England's independence from Rome, required moderate worship, and set standardized services and clergy. Its goal was to promote religious stability, reduce divisions, and prevent further conflict between Catholics and Protestants within the country.
