Electron band structure refers to the range of energy levels that electrons can occupy in a solid material. In simple terms, electrons can move freely within certain energy bands but are restricted from existing in gaps between these bands. The arrangement and separation of these bands influence a material's electrical and thermal properties. For example, conductors have overlapping bands allowing free electron movement, while insulators have wide gaps preventing it.
