Electrolysis is a process that uses electrical energy to split a compound into its basic elements. For example, when electricity passes through water, it separates into hydrogen and oxygen gases. This is achieved by placing conductive electrodes into the substance; one electrode attracts positive ions (cations), and the other attracts negative ions (anions). The electrical current causes a chemical reaction that breaks the bonds holding the elements together. Electrolysis is widely used to produce pure metals, hydrogen fuel, and to purify materials, playing a key role in industries like energy, manufacturing, and chemical processing.
