Electoral Reform Referendum (2018)
The 2018 Electoral Reform Referendum in New Zealand asked voters whether they wanted to change how they elect Members of Parliament. The government proposed switching from the current mixed-member proportional (MMP) system to a single-district first-past-the-post (FPTP) system. The goal was to see if voters preferred a different way of electing representatives to better reflect their preferences. Ultimately, the referendum resulted in most voters choosing to keep the existing MMP system, maintaining proportional representation to ensure political diversity.
