Eigenfaces

Eigenfaces are a method used for recognizing and verifying human faces in images. They analyze many face photos to identify common features—like the shape of the eyes, nose, or mouth—that consistently appear across different images. By extracting these key features into a set of mathematical patterns called "eigenfaces," a computer can efficiently compare new face images to stored ones. When someone’s face is presented, the system projects it onto this set of patterns to see how well it matches a known face. This technique helps in facial recognition tasks like security and photo organization.
