EGFRvIII

EGFRvIII is a specific mutated form of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a protein that helps cells grow and divide. In certain cancers, especially some brain tumors like glioblastoma, EGFRvIII is produced when a genetic change causes parts of the gene to be deleted. This results in a receptor that is constantly active, fueling uncontrolled cell growth and tumor development. Because EGFRvIII is unique to cancer cells and not found in normal tissue, it’s a potential target for cancer treatments designed to specifically attack tumor cells while sparing healthy ones.
