EGF receptor

The epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor is a protein found on the surface of many cells. It acts like a receiver for specific signals called growth factors, particularly the epidermal growth factor. When EGF binds to the receptor, it activates it, triggering a chain reaction inside the cell that promotes growth, division, and repair. This process is vital for normal development and healing. However, if the EGF receptor becomes overactive or mutated, it can lead to uncontrolled cell growth, contributing to the development of certain cancers.
