Education Welfare Officer
An Education Welfare Officer (EWO) is a professional responsible for supporting students' regular school attendance and wellbeing. They work with families, schools, and local authorities to identify and address barriers to attendance, such as health issues or family difficulties. Their goal is to prevent truancy and ensure children receive a proper education, promoting positive engagement with school. By offering advice, facilitating interventions, and sometimes enforcing attendance laws, EWOs help create a supportive environment that encourages students to attend school consistently and thrive academically and socially.
