Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA)
The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA), enacted in 1975, ensures that children with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education. It requires schools to provide services tailored to each child's unique needs, including special education and related services. The law promotes inclusion, meaning children with disabilities should be educated alongside their peers whenever possible. EAHCA laid the groundwork for modern special education laws, fostering equity and access to educational opportunities for all children, regardless of their abilities. This act is now part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
