Edmund Fitzgerald
The Edmund Fitzgerald was a large American cargo ship, known as a laker, that operated on the Great Lakes. Launched in 1958, it was primarily used to transport iron ore across Lake Superior. On November 10, 1975, during a fierce storm with high winds and waves, the Fitzgerald sank suddenly in Lake Superior, resulting in the loss of all 29 crew members. Its wreck was discovered in 1975, and the tragedy is remembered as one of the most significant maritime disasters on the Great Lakes. The ship remains a symbol of maritime history and harsh weather conditions in the region.
