Edmonton Protocol
The Edmonton Protocol is a medical treatment for type 1 diabetes that involves transplanting insulin-producing cells, called islets, from a donor pancreas into a patient's liver. This procedure helps the patient produce their own insulin, reducing or eliminating the need for daily insulin injections. It was developed at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and is considered a significant advancement because it improves blood sugar control and reduces complications. However, because it relies on donor cells and immune suppression drugs, it is usually reserved for people with severe diabetes who don't respond well to other treatments.
