Edith Windsor

Edith Windsor was an LGBTQ+ rights activist whose landmark legal case, United States v. Windsor, played a pivotal role in advancing marriage equality in the United States. In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled in her favor, striking down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which prevented the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. This decision allowed same-sex couples to receive federal benefits and set a legal precedent that contributed to the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide in 2015.
