Edict of Revocation
The Edict of Revocation was a royal declaration issued by King Louis XIV of France in 1685. It revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had granted religious freedoms and protections to French Protestants (Huguenots). As a result, Protestant churches were closed, and many Huguenots faced persecution, forcing many to convert to Catholicism or flee the country. This edict aimed to promote religious unity under Catholicism but led to significant religious and social upheaval, impacting the Huguenots’ lives and France’s economy due to the loss of skilled Protestant workers.
