Edict of Caracalla
The Edict of Caracalla, issued in 212 CE, was a decree by Roman Emperor Caracalla that granted Roman citizenship to all free residents of the empire. This meant that every free person, regardless of their birthplace or social status, gained legal rights and protections under Roman law. It also increased the empire's tax revenue, as Roman citizenship came with tax obligations. This edict significantly expanded the social and legal unity of the empire, integrating diverse populations into the Roman system and helping to strengthen imperial control.
