Echinococcus granulosus

Echinococcus granulosus is a tiny tapeworm that can cause a disease called cystic echinococcosis in humans. Its adult worms live in the intestines of dogs and other canines, releasing eggs into the environment through their feces. When humans accidentally ingest these eggs—often through contaminated food, water, or contact with infected animals—they can develop cysts mainly in the liver and lungs. These cysts grow slowly and can cause health problems if large or complicated. The infection is typically managed with medication or surgery, and prevention involves proper hygiene, controlling infected animals, and safe food practices.
