Eccentric Viewing Techniques
Eccentric viewing techniques are methods used to see better when central vision is impaired, such as in age-related macular degeneration. Instead of looking directly at an object, you intentionally focus slightly to the side of it. Your peripheral (side) vision, which is less affected, then helps you see the object more clearly. Training involves practicing this shift of gaze to find the best spot, called a preferred retinal locus, for viewing. These techniques help maximize remaining vision and improve daily activities like reading and recognizing faces.
