Eccentric Contraction
An eccentric contraction occurs when a muscle lengthens while it is still actively contracting, usually to control or decelerate movement. For example, when lowering a weight or descending stairs, your muscles actively work while stretching to manage the movement smoothly. This process helps muscles absorb shock and control motion, preventing injury. Eccentric contractions generate force but often feel less strenuous than other types, even though they can cause more muscle soreness afterward. They are essential for muscle strength and stability, playing a key role in movements that involve controlled lengthening of muscles.
