East German government
The East German government, officially known as the German Democratic Republic (GDR), was a socialist state from 1949 to 1990 aligned with the Soviet Union. It was led by the Socialist Unity Party, which maintained strict control over politics, economy, and society. The government emphasized state ownership of industries and was characterized by limited political freedoms, censorship, and surveillance of citizens. Despite its socialist ideals, East Germany faced economic difficulties and political repression, ultimately leading to its peaceful reunification with West Germany in 1990.
