East Berlin

East Berlin was the capital of East Germany (GDR) from 1949 until reunification in 1990. It was located in the eastern part of Berlin, separated from West Berlin by the Berlin Wall, which the East German government built to prevent citizens from fleeing to the West. East Berlin was characteristic of a socialist state, with state-controlled industries, propaganda, and architecture reflecting communist ideals. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, East Berlin became part of unified Berlin and Germany. Today, it is a vibrant district blending historical monuments with modern development.
