Earl of Selkirk (Thomas Douglas)
Thomas Douglas, the 5th Earl of Selkirk, was a Scottish nobleman and philanthropist in the early 19th century. He is best known for sponsoring immigrant settlements in Canada, especially in what is now Manitoba. His goal was to create opportunities for displaced Scottish crofters and to promote agricultural development. Notably, he founded the Red River Settlement (modern-day Winnipeg) in 1812. His efforts contributed to Canada's development and helped establish Scottish influence in North America. Despite facing challenges and conflicts, his vision helped shape the early history of Canadian settlement and expansion.
