The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a large bird of prey native to North America, easily recognized by its white head and tail contrasting with a dark brown body and wings. It typically measures about 3 feet in length with a wingspan of up to 7 feet. Bald eagles are powerful hunters, feeding mainly on fish but also on small mammals and birds. They prefer open areas near water, such as lakes and rivers, where they build large nests called eyries. Symbolizing strength and freedom, they are the national bird of the United States and are protected by law.
