E951 (Aspartame)
E951, commonly known as Aspartame, is an artificial sweetener used as a low-calorie alternative to sugar. It is about 200 times sweeter than sugar, so only small amounts are needed to enhance sweetness. Aspartame is found in numerous products like diet sodas, sugar-free gum, and light desserts. It is made from amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Regulatory agencies worldwide, including the FDA and EFSA, have reviewed safety data and consider it safe for most people when consumed within approved limits. However, individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU) must avoid it, as they cannot metabolize phenylalanine, a component of aspartame.
