E-wave
The E-wave is a specific measurement seen in an echocardiogram, which uses ultrasound to visualize the heart. It represents the initial, rapid phase of blood flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle during early diastole (heart relaxation). When the heart relaxes after each beat, the atrium pushes blood into the ventricle, causing a surge detected as the E-wave. Its size and shape help doctors assess how well the heart relaxes and fills with blood. Abnormalities can indicate issues such as diastolic dysfunction or heart failure.
